It’s an exciting time to visit Denver. Michelin Guide Inspectors have been anonymously dining in the city’s finest restaurants to determine which eateries are worthy of stars. The Denver Nuggets are the reigning NBA champs and there’s palpable sports pride in the Mile High City.
If it has been a while since you’ve visited Denver for a concert at Red Rocks or to enjoy the breweries, restaurants and museums, there’s a lot that’s new—like Oakwell Beer Spa, where you can soak in tubs of hops and barley, and Meow Wolf’s Convergence Station, which features four distinct universes of mind-bending art.
Just as enticing as all the happenings in Denver is the city’s hotel scene, which includes a unique mix of boutique hotels with playful amenities. Whether you’re coming to Denver for vacation or you’re bookending your fall or winter ski trip with overnight stays in the city, here are eight boutique hotels that should be on your radar.
You can’t beat The Ramble Hotel for a fashionable stay. Designers of this 50-room boutique hotel in the River North neighborhood were inspired by Madame Rambouillet’s French salons of the 17th century. With a relaxed aura, the space is filled with deep jewel tones, batten boards and Persian rugs in the bedrooms, leather seating to match the shade of your whisky, velvet couches, plus chandeliers hanging from high ceilings in the lobby that look like statement jewelry.
The Ramble is within walking distance of breweries as well as some local-favorite restaurants, like Uchi, which has a Houston outpost and is the spot for sushi and omakase in Denver. Also nearby are Super Mega Bien, which features Latin-American cuisine served dim sum-style and Cart-Driver, where you can pair pizza with oysters for an eclectic dining experience.
Hang with in-the-know Denverites at Death & Co., which is well-established as one of the best places in the city for cocktails, but also has fresh baked cookies sprinkled with sea salt that make for a nice nightcap, too.
Take a photo at the “Wish You Were Here” sign on the terrace at the hotel’s restaurant The Garden before you check out.
The Maven backs up to Denver’s hippest pedestrian alleyway, the Dairy Block, which is lined with boutiques, restaurants and bars including a subterranean joint called Run For The Roses where the drink menu is on playing cards. The convivial block, an adjoining Milk Market food hall and The Maven, a 172-room hotel, weave seamlessly together.
For baseball lovers, slide into the Diamond Suite, which is stocked with classic baseball movies, decked out in decor that’s a nod to America’s favorite pastime and comes with views of Coors Field.
The Maven also features more than 400 pieces of original art from local and up-and-coming Colorado artists. A commanding centerpiece suspended in the hotel lobby is a 500-pound hand sculpture that was made with reclaimed wood. While you’re waiting for an elevator, check out the assemblage of found black-and-white photos.
Grab your morning cup of Joe from a vintage Airstream trailer in the lobby, and a cocktail of the month at Poka Lola, a sophisticated on-site bar that’s inspired by old-fashion soda fountain shops.
The problem with most extended-stay hotels is that they’re usually soulless spots with waffle irons, parking lot views and drab decor. Catbird Hotel—a hotel where digital nomads, business travelers and tourists come together—defies stereotypes and offers a boutique stay with lovely (and inspiring) spaces throughout. You can borrow plants for your room, there are in-room kitchenettes and the rooftop bar The Red Barber is always up to something fun, like a zodiac sign-inspired cocktail menu.
When you retire to your room, pull down the projector screen and watch a movie from your lofted bed.
As for breakfast, enjoy made-to-order plates and cold brew in a high-design, plant-filled space with a charming mix of textures and colors. Spend the night or stay for a couple weeks.
The chicest neighborhood in Denver is Cherry Creek. For an exclusive stay to match the vibe, check in at the Halcyon, where rooms are furnished with record players, the rooftop pool comes with unspoiled views of the Rocky Mountains and there’s a hidden bar called B&GC to seek out.
Halcyon has a lobby-level gear garage stocked with vinyl records, Piaggio scooters, longboards, board games, Go Pro cameras and more. The rooftop pool’s cabanas are winterized during the colder months, which is when the hotel sets up its curling rink.
Grab a meal from Local Jones, the on-site restaurant, and save room for dessert. Pastry Chef Saura Kline knows how to satiate a sweet tooth, and after you check out you can follow her on Instagram, where she shares dessert recipes.
The Art, a Hotel fits right in with Denver’s culturally rich Golden Triangle neighborhood. The hotel neighbors the Denver Art Museum and History Colorado and is close to other must-visit spots including the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art and the Clyfford Still Museum.
After exhibit-hopping, return to the hotel, where you will be greeted by a dazzling display of 22,000 lights at the porte-cochère that makes it feel as though you’re showing up for a red carpet event. Grab a cocktail at the hotel’s rooftop bar Fire Terrace, which features great city views and fire pits, or grab a meal at the light-filled Fire Restaurant & Lounge. Across the street is a 40 by 80-foot canvas of a tropical beach with cheeky text that says “Ocean View.”
The hotel recently unveiled a $3 million, property-wide refresh, and rooms are accented with pops of color and white Italian marble in the bathrooms.
With restaurants, a food hall, a beloved local bookstore called the Tattered Cover Book Store and an outdoor LED screen that measures 66 feet by 20 feet and shows sporting events and movies, McGregor Square is a fun addition in downtown Denver’s ballpark neighborhood.
The lively square is directly across from Coors Field and it’s anchored by The Rally Hotel, which has subtle design details that baseball lovers will appreciate—like a leather banquette with stitching that’s reminiscent of a mitt and room numbers in a font that feels familiar in stadiums. During the hotel’s afternoon social hour, you can order a Coca-Cola float or a scoop of ice cream served in a baseball helmet.
The Rally also has a rooftop pool and hot tub, a Starbucks outpost and The Original, which is a modern diner that serves brunch fare and The Rally Bar.
Note: This stylish hotel also has a Mile High King Suite that towers at exactly one mile (5,280 feet) above sea level and features a sultry purple color scheme.
The move: Fly into Denver International Airport, hop on the A-Line that’ll zip you straight to Union Station and then head to The Crawford Hotel, which is located inside the renovated Beaux-Arts train station.
The 112-room Crawford Hotel is for modern time travelers—with elegant touches of Art Deco plus Pullman-style rooms that evoke train travel and amenities like clawfoot tubs.
You could do a bar crawl within the train station, with charcuterie and bubbles, and dine at Mercantile Dining and Provision or grab local beers at the Terminal Bar. Definitely pop into The Cooper Lounge on the mezzanine-level for cocktails—it’s the kind of place that feels like you’ll run into Gatsby. But if you want to get out and explore, utilize the hotel’s courtesy car service for a ride to destinations within a 2-mile radius of the hotel.
Mingle with locals at Clayton Hotel & Members Club, a gorgeous hotel in the posh Cherry Creek neighborhood. The 63-room boutique hotel boasts mid-century furnishings and bright and airy guest rooms.
The hotel’s gathering spaces set it apart—from a rooftop pool that feels like a little beach club on the Italian coast to Cretans, where you can enjoy pour-over martinis, natural wines and a dip tour served with flatbread and crudités. Additionally, Chez Roc is a Moroccan-inspired piano lounge that keeps the drinks and music flowing, and Kini’s is a Mediterranean restaurant with a raw bar, branzino and lamb chops.
During a stay, guests can enjoy member perks, sit in on artist talks and gain access to exclusive spaces, like the library and a coworking lounge.
